German Bundesliga restarts

The German Bundesliga restarts this Saturday and we can’t wait. Finally, some soccer is starting to get back underway. We will take a look at the upcoming Saturday matches and give our predictions.

What impact has the COVID-19 break had on teams and players leading into tomorrows matches?

Borussia Dortmund Vs FC Schalke 04

Watch on FS1, Fox Deportes, fuboTV, 9:30am

Dortmund is the obvious choice here to pick up the three points. Schalke haven’t won in their last five outings prior to the coronavirus outbreak. They have drew three of their last five matches having only managed to find the back of the net twice, while conceding a whooping 10 goals. Being a team that has focused mainly on fitness, they may find it hard to keep up with Dortmund’s attack in the Revierderby.

Taking center stage will be Erling Haaland who just seems to find the net with every touch he takes. If Schalke’s pre COVID-19 defensive record continues, it could be a long 90 minutes for David Wagners men. Two Americans could take the pitch, Dortmunds Gio Reyna and Schalke’s Weston Mckennie, adding a reason for American soccer fans to tune in.

Prediction- Dortmund 4-0 Schalke. We are going for a big one here as Dortmund continue to close the gap on league leaders Bayern Munich.

“Haaland will grab a welcome back hat-trick.”

FC Ausburg Vs VfL Wolfsburg

Watch on fuboTV, Fox Soccer Go, 9:30am

Ausburg boss Heiko Herrlich will not take charge of his first match after breaking his teams coronavirus hotel quarantine guidelines, leaving to get toothpaste and skin creme. He will have to register two negative coronavirus tests before returning to action. This doesn’t bode well for a struggling Ausburg side who have taken one point from their last five matches.

Wolfsburg on the other hand are unbeaten in their last five. A win will increase their bid for Europa League qualification by leap frogging Schalke, if results go their way. Ausburg have scored more goals than Wolfsburg which makes us believe this will be a low scoring match, but the away side should bag all three points here.

Prediction- Ausburg 1-2 Wolfsburg. Wolfsburg will start off the post coronavirus season with a win. We just don’t see Ausburg having enough to to get anything from the match.

“Thinking about toothpaste, can’t you get that from the hotel concierge?”

Fortuna Dusseldorf Vs SC Paderborn 07

Watch on Fox Soccer Match Pass, 9:30am

This match at the bottom end of the table is a coin toss between these two sides. Both teams are battling relegation, with Paderborn’s fate seemingly decided. Albeit, they can still mathematically stay up. Paderborn are on a four match losing streak, with their last point coming in a 1-1 draw against Schalke back in early February.

Dusseldorf, yes a team in the Bundesliga, not a school house in the Harry Potter series, struggle to find any consistency. That may continue against Panderborn.

Prediction- Dusseldorf 1-1 Paderborn. Neither team are going to want to lose their re-opening match, we expect a dull one here with both teams sharing the points.

“The bottom of the league relegation matches can be just as fun, not this time though.”

RB Leipzig Vs Freiburg

Watch on USA, FS2, fuboTV, 9:30am

Surprisingly, RB Leipzig are only five points off the top of the Bundesliga, and are in the quarter finals of the Champions League. Leipzig are led by their on fire striker Timo Werner, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool. Werner will look to keep his team in the hunt as they take on mid table Freiburg, with aspirations of their own. Freiburg are knocking on the door of the Europa League qualification spots, but may find their opponents a little too hard to handle away from home.

Prediction- RB Leipzig 2-0 Freiburg. Freiburg are another team struggling for consistency and this so called fresh start doesn’t look like the match to get off to winning ways. RB Leipzip certaintly won’t want to give anymore ground to Bayern and Dortmund, who look almost certain to pick up maximum points in their matches.

“We like RB Leipzig, and hope they can continue their run in the Champions League.”

1899 Hoffenheim Vs Hertha Berlin

Watch on Fox Soccer Match Pass, 9:30am

Its hard to pick a winner here. Hoffenheim were in free fall pre-COVID-19 losing three of their last five matches. They will look to turn things around as they are still in the mix for Europa League qualification. Hertha Berlin’s fortunes could swing either way as they are flirting with both Europa League qualification, which seems unlikely, and relegation. We think Hertha Berlin are going to finish outside of both the Europa League and relegation places. However, they will continue to be a nuisance to teams who need the points.

Prediction- 1899 Hoffenheim 1-1 Hertha Berlin. It will be a share of the spoils for both clubs on their return to action with Hoffenheim losing ground on the Europa League pack. Hertha Berlin will be resilient and prove to be a thorn in the side of many teams.

“This is a tricky one and we could be proved wrong with either team capable of pulling out a result, so we took the middle ground.”

Eintracht Frankfurt Vs Borussia Monchengladbach

Watch on FS1 USA, Sling TV, fubo TV 12:30pm

Borussia M’Gladbach are keeping the title race interesting, sitting only six points adrift from leaders Bayern. They have a favorable match away from home against a Frankfurt team that broke a losing streak of three matches. If this match was played before the COVID-19 outbreak, we feel Frankfurt might have edged this one. Unfortunately, it won’t happen this week. As much as we want to, we won’t get to see Borussia M’Gladbach’s cardboard cut fans at their home stadium, but we are interested in seeing what other teams conjure up to create an atmosphere. With matches being played behind closed doors teams are coming up with various ways to simulate fan support. Frankfurt are going to have to come up with something big in this one.

Prediction- Eintracht Frankfurt 1-2 Borussia Monchengladbach. The race for the top will continue to heat up with the away side claiming all three points. Bayern, who play on Sunday will be under pressure to bring home all three points to keep their four point lead at the top of the Bundesliga intact.

“With this match wrapping up Saturdays action, we will want more on Bundesliga action this Sunday.”
